It all started with a few pistons, cylinders, and camshafts. Ransom E. Olds and Henry Ford both built gasoline-powered automobiles in 1896. Around the turn of the century, Michigan's factories began producing cars. In 1913, Henry Ford sped things up by installing assembly lines to help build the Model TΓÇöhis most popular car.
Detroit was the main hub for automobile production, but factories popped up in Flint, Pontiac, and Lansing. Car production went into high gear and helped Michigan grow and prosper!
Michigan also laid the first mile of concrete highway in 1909 and installed the very first traffic light in 1915.
